As many (or at least some) of you know, I've been going through a lot with hurricane Katrina's aftermath. It's been about two and a half months since the storm hit, but the effects are long-lasting.

My location has been changing almost constantly over the past couple of months, but I've found a place to settle in Minnesota (with Jorlain, a fellow GM and very close friend of mine.) Unfortunately, my time in Minnesota right now is about to be short-lived.

I need to be with my family in Louisiana right now. They have no internet access (I own the only computer that survived the storm, only because it's a laptop, heh,) so I'm not sure when I'll be able to post updates. It shouldn't be far off into the future because I was still able to update from my hotel room just after the storm hit. Rest assured, I'll find a way to make it all happen ;)

I won't be leaving for at least a few days, most likely a week or two, but I'll post a reply to my own thread (yeah, kinda lame, huh?) when I do to let everyone know what's going on. I'll also post another reply when I get internet access once again.

My parents live out in the sticks now, so there's no cable or DSL service available... only dial-up. I'm contemplating satellite internet through DirecWay and at $70 per month, I think my dad wouldn't mind going halfway with me. We'll just have to see how everything works out before we get that.

Anyway. I just wanted to let everyone know my plans and that website updates may be delayed.

Kindest regards to everyone,
--Vulsin

Best of luck on your move, I hope things clean up fast down there.

As for your Internet dilemma… I live in the sticks too and had to resort to DirecWay my self, downloads at like 500-700k up loads at am mere 40-60k but when ya figure the cost of an ISP and another phone line kinda wash the cost of the service and the 500k downloads beat the heck out of the dialups. Also I had to front $600.00 for equipment with a $100.00 rebate after one month of use????(Should have just sold it for $ 500.00 to start with) and I think it’s $59.99 per month for my plan and use a wireless router vs. 10 more bucks for another drop. All that said there are some drawbacks… remember about 2-3 weeks ago when the NE was covered in clouds and rain, I was pulling my hair out when my friggen reception was in and out for about a week strait because of a storm over the main transmitter ***shrug*** Just some food for thought.

Again I hope all goes well…Lan.

Thanks for the firsthand account of using DirecWay; it should help my parents and my decision for using it. It is a bit pricey, but as you've said, it beats the heck out of dialup :P

I also really appreciate the well-wishing, and contrary to what some may think, it actually does help. Moral support works wonders, you know?

Ok, I'm leaving for Louisiana today (Thursday, 11/17/05), so I'm not sure when I'll be back on. I'm guessing I can get on from the hotel room I grab for the night though :P

I'm now in Covington, LA so my living situation has once again stabilized... for now.

I'm on a crappy dialup connection until I can get DirecWay, Starband or another satellite internet provider because there's no cable or DSL available in this area, but I'm online!

I told you I'd find a way to keep doing updates ;)
