Distant Lands - Roleplay Required Edition

Starting January 1st, 2010 at midnight EST, the Distant Lands Roleplay Required Edition is officially open to the public on DL2.NET port 4444. This is a new edition of DL that will run in addition to the current version. All non-Staff characters will start from scratch. Additionally, there are some some significant policy, rule, and code related changes (amongst other things). Here are some of the details:

Policy and rule related changes:

o Roleplay Required - Everywhere, all the time (unless explicitly noted)
o 18+ Years old to play - Adults Only
o 1 Character Per Account (+Staff member where applicable)
o Administrative Motto ... "It is what it is." -- Someone killed you? Your stuff was stolen? Someone cussed at you? It is what it is. Figure it out for yourself, in character.

Code related changes:

o Death is permanent... unless you are resurrected within 24 game hours (about 30 minutes).
o Currencies - 10 copper = 1 bronze, 10 bronze = 1 silver, 10 silver = 1 gold, 10 gold = 1 platinum, 10 platinum = 1 mithril, 10 mithril = 1 adamantium
o Coins have an encumbrance impact
o Streamlined character creation helps get you into the game and roleplaying
o Combat has been slowed down just a touch
o Movement has been additionally restricted
o New score command helps new players get adjusted to DL faster (while staying in character)

Please note that while there is some overlap in Staff, these 2 editions are essentially completely separate games from an administrative perspective even though they share a common development base -- typically changes (such as new areas, code, etc.) made in one will be made in the other where it is perceived they will be positively received.

Also note that you can be logged into both editions at the same time without fear of multiplaying.

Hope to see you all there and that you have a Happy New Year!

The thing with me is, I like to get into character and set them up with some fun roleplaying. I've found it hard to do so, when they normally don't live beyond level 10. It's almost at the point where, right when I get into the character and start to get into some deep roleplay and meet people, I die. Maybe "con" lose, put into RP version would help? Or something else..

Yes, I know, stop worrying about levels! I've tried and just traveled around to meet people and mobs. Got aggro by a mob and couldn't escape in time, because my dex was 5!

Also, stat picking is another ruff thing for me. I intended to create all sorts of fun characters. For example, I wanted one with 2 charisma and 2 wisdom. I wanted some ugly little gnome or orc with the worst memory ever running around causing hell.
Another, with the max INT I could roll myself with the worst luck. I wanted this char to think he was so smart, he would be able to lift things using him mind. Kill things by just having his brain power (INT) focus in on the targets. Then his luck always kicks in and has him fail, most of the time, failing hard (getting hurt, breaking things, etc)

Also, I was a victim of this at first. So this also includes me. This is ROLEPLAYING. Yet, everyone is doing the same they did in the normal DL (non perm rp). Running around hack-n-slash anything they can kill. Come on guys/gals.. this is ROLEPLAYING. Why are we murdering field hands by the dozens? Why are we completely thrashing Binkbeyers without any second thought??

Beware what you attack because bigger things might be looming nearby... or be summoned pretty quickly. The fields ARE part of Turien and the knights DO have jurisdiction over them ;)

Just FYI... :naughty:

Nas really seems to be the shizz when it comes to rp. I agree with him on the hack and slash. He also has great ideas for some rp character ideas. For those reasons, there has to be more ways to get exp other than hack and slash. I understand tasks, but there isn't the staffing power to make more tasks atm. If there was that, then gaining exp would be fine and we could get chars up there in levels. Death is a big issue. I agree with con loss for the rp server.

How to solve exp issues... Maybe for every minute we're playing on the rp server, we gain exp. Maybe also every say ten new rooms we visit, we get a big bonus gain in exp. There would of course have to be the timer just as if you stop moving around in rp the timer slows. Otherwise people could trigger to sit there all day and get levels like a certain character did with mpp a while back and got in trouble. Also, could the mpp gains be upped on the rp server? There has to be big bonus' for going rp all the time.

Just a few thoughts and suggestions. I'll be into the rp server if there's a fun reason for me to play it with big bonus' for being rp. But never getting past level 10 and having to hack and slash my way to get there isn't fun. I'll stick to leveling my chars I've spent years on already.

Much love.

-Lower mpp gain time requirements, maybe 15 mins for one mpp, and make mpp cashing out say 1 mpp per 10k exp, or some fun equation for a % of your next level

-Lower mpp requirements for purchases.
-World mpp bonus: 1 mpp bonus per player when you gain.
-Constant exp and regen bonus per player should be a norm.

Hey there. Checking in on old DL again. (I get this compulsion from time to time ;) )
Curious about this edition in particular.

Has Silex responded to any of the player recommendations? Any word on possible changes based on these recommendations?
I'm mainly curious about the permanent death thing, but also about how open the devs are to the input of the player-base overall.

Also, how many players do you typically have logged into the RRE at one time? What's the average? What's the most?

Gadren,

Actually the version of DL you would normally know is basically gone to a point. There was a rough patch and DL was closed for good at one point. Luckily Nezmar (Silex) found it in his heart to open it back up though there is only one open and that is the RP version. Nezmar is the -only- staff member right now and could be for some time to come though he takes a TON into perspective and is just trying to make it WAY fun for everyone. I do believe there is perm death but its only after you have lost all your constitution points. The rez timer is five min so its not to bad. There are no quests as of this time so you can keep leveling at your own will. The typical player base at the time is probably around 7-9 normal active players though of course you have the times of 0-1 online. Things are looking up and DL I think is moving in a good direction. Honestly to see a MUD keep going like this is freaking awesome because of everyone always wanting to play the visual graphic games now.

Theres my 2 cents!

There's some kind of major bug and I don't have time to fix it right now. DL is down until further notice.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Best regards,

Aww, well I hope it isn't too big of a bug. If you don't mind me asking, what was it?

It's a giant bug, I know that much, but I really must confess I have almost no idea what it is... and right now I don't have time to look into it. I'll post details when I've got it figured out.

Best regards,

I've sent an email to Nezmar documenting how extensive all three bugs are, and hopefully practical solutions that are not too time intensive.

I know we are all sad, but really this does need to be fixed to be balanced before more people discover it and then it truly ruins the fun in the game.

Sorry for any inconvenience, and hopefully in the near future all will be resolved and playing can resume.

Hope to see you all soon in game.

Sylvius, Sylvar, Sol.
